On August 23 more than two hundred people put on their best white attire, packed their picnic baskets and waited for the text that would tell them where to go for this year’s Dinner in White, a fundraiser for the University of Colorado Cancer Center (and a heck of a good date!). After a massive storm caused the event to be cancelled last year, many of the people involved were nervous about a repeat offender as dark clouds loomed in the distance. But then clouds cleared, texts rolled out, and the lucky partygoers headed for Infinite Monkey Theorem – an urban winery on Larimer Street. Organized by a volunteer committee of young professionals and chaired by Megan Peddycord, a marketing specialist, Dinner in White is a fundraising event for a new generation of people concerned about cancer care. Utilizing social media and word of mouth to spread the message, guests must be “in the know” to attend. The location is not revealed until an hour before the event starts, which ticket holders find out via social media, text message or email.
This year’s event was unlike any other. The night began with a local jazz band setting the mood as guests arrived and enjoyed their dinners. VIP guests indulged in food from Le Central while others brought their own picnics. Entertainment included a local dance group, a photo booth, a wall of wine and various vendors and food trucks serving goodies throughout the evening. There was also a signature drink, “Le fleur blanc”, a delicious blend of vodka, lillet blanc, St. Germaine, lemon juice and grapefruit bitters as well as plenty of wine to go around.
The night ended with inspirational speeches from Ben Parsons, the owner of Infinite Monkey Theorem, who lost his father to colon cancer and Courtney Livingston, who underwent a double mastectomy after discovering she carried the BRCA2+ gene. After a balloon release in honor of all of those who have lost their battle to the disease guests continued to dance to night away with the help of DJ Chonz.
“The CU Cancer Center is doing amazing things, but most people don’t realize this until they or someone they love has cancer and is seeking treatment there,” says Peddycord. “Dinner in White is an awesome opportunity to not only raise funds for the organization, but also to raise awareness among Denver’s young professionals of the critical research happening right here in our community.”
Like many others, Peddycord has big plans for the future of Dinner in White.
“After last year’s event was rained out, it was so important to me that we come back with a vengeance in 2014 to prove our commitment to both CUCCF and our supporters,” she says “We need to keep up the momentum year after year and hopefully one day soon we’ll be able to knock out cancer completely.”
